Pepper is native to Malabar coast of Kerala, South of India and is well known to Indian kitchen at least since 2BC. Pepper Corns, the dired fruit were a precious commodity which is often referred to as "black gold". Before the 16th centuary, Pepper was grown in Java, Sumatra, Madagascar, Malayasia and in South east Asia.

In India it is used as a spice as well as folk medicine. But in western countries it is used as a seasoning.Ports of the malabar area served as a stop off point for trade in Indian Ocean, following in British colonisation in India, virtually all black pepper found in Europe, Middle east and North Africa were from malabar Region.
